Been here 10+ years and loving it!

My family and I also live in State Road, which is just a few miles outside of Elkin. Let's start with the many many amazing things about the area:
1) The Elkin School system is very highly ranked and regarded. They send a ton of kids to great schools and in general the kids are super nice.
2) The locals really work hard to make their community better. Our trails systems is incredible and growing each year, thanks to a small group of people who grew into a larger group of people, who did an incredible about of work to make that all happen. One can walk (or mountain bike) for miles, eventually going all the way to Stone Mountain, and all on very nice, well maintained trails.
Another example is our downtown. True, it will take some time to really get the downtown hopping, but again a few local individuals have spent their hard earned time and money to lay the groundwork for future success.

An Outsider's Guide to North Carolina : A Horror S
- 9/2/2015
I moved here 21 years ago from East Tennessee to be with my estranged wife and unborn child. If not for them, I would never have came here. I am still trapped here. North Carolina has two faces, the mountains and the sea, and about half of the people here have two faces as well.
A large portion of the people in this area are generally ignorant, sullen, mean, and unfriendly; the black and hispanic population are generally friendlier than some of the white folks. I have met a lot of nice people trapped economicly in North Carolina. The tax rate is unfair and too high. The cost of living is going up, especially with rental properties and food. Since a lot of industries have fled the country, you can visit the big empty buildings throughout this fair state in every small town. The big cities have more to offer economically, but the crime rate is higher. Schools suck here. The colleges are okay, if you can afford to go. Raleigh and Charlotte are the kings and queens of the

Elkin City Schools are some of the best in the nation! Elkin High School doesn't just meet a standard, but sets a bar that only two other schools in North Carolina exceed; it has the third highest average SAT scores in the state.
The students at Elkin High have the 45th best scores in the

Elkin is a great small town
- 1/4/2010
Grew up here. Unemployment, like much of the south,is due to outsourcing of textile industry. Currently Elkin, Yadkin Valley, has a thriving wine industry and many vineyards nearby.
It is a pretty town with a strong community spirit and an excellent school system.
Also for a town its size, has a high percentage of physicians and a good, small hospital.
Winston Salem and Charlotte are both not far away for shopping
